The continuing tales of Mr Blobby

Unfortunately, although Dave and Maria had planned to take Mr Blobby away with them for the 2nd successive Christmas,events changed at the last minute. Last year, there was no problem, due to the fact that the Beggs were spending their time in the UK. This time Egypt was their destination. In the final stages of planning, our little friend's visa was refused and alternative arrangements had to be made for him. Sadly,the authorities had been informed of some of his past misdemeanours.

Mr and Mrs Bobby were very disappointed and to soften the blow, Les suggested they could travel with him and Sheila by car to visit family in the UK. In order for him to keep a low profile, major roads were avoided where possible and the trip was incident free

When reaching Cheshire, he was able to catch up on the local news in the popular rag with reminders that his behaviour must be impeccable!!

Later he visited a local farm shop and met Rachel as well as Father Christmas.

He was happy to be steered away from the local wines, but was shocked and upset at the price of the oranges. Next time he is considering bringing some over and setting up a roadside stall.

Ever the entrepreneur!!!

The seasoned traveller then went on to visit France and enjoyed showing off his command of the language. Thankfully, he could not afford the local vin rouge or much else for that matter. It wasn't surprising to learn that the locals who lived near the Spanish border went into Spain for shopping and petrol! Nevertheless he enjoyed the visit, especially hearing about the history of the various cities and exploring this beautiful country.

I know you will be pleased to hear he is now back in Spain and eagerly anticipating seeing Jackie. He has been doing regular training for the cage fighting and is keen not to let his much loved friend down.

He has really missed her endearing name for him and looks forward to hearing the dulcette tones of her calling , “Where's that b........y midget?' A unique relationship n'est pas!!

Alfredo won his way through many summer rounds of golf to compete in the Circuito Canal Plus Golf Final Nacional. Isla Valdecañas, Cáceres, Extremadura.
He played against tough opposition at courses all over Spain.

The venue would be the world famous El Camaleón Golf Club, home of the USPGA Fedex Cup Golf Classic.

He and Maria would both fly to Mexico with Pullmantur Air.

It looks like everyone's having a great time.

A fantastic course.

His result? He came in 5th position with a score of plus 2, over 72 holes. There was a 3 way tie for 2nd place , all on 1 over. The winner had a score of 4 under.

The clocks have changed and the mornings do feel a lot different. With an early tee off of 9.20am, most members set off at 8 o'clock. Poor things, I hear you say. That is those of you still enjoying a lie in. It was still hot enough for some to be wearing shorts. We remember this time last year when the fires were lit and the heating was switched on.

We again congregated in Molina Segura, the home of Altorreal Golf, on a lovely warm November morning. What a life !

We were met by Lola and her team for our 3rd match of the season with her usual welcoming, yet professional greeting. The buggies were as usual lined up outside the office and the keys were handed over to me ready to pass on to the players upon their arrival, when they were to be told of their pairs and groups.

We would at this point like to pass on our best wishes to Bob Brownlie and Annaliese and to welcome back many players after their absence from last month's match.

First off and eager to go, were our Spanish friends and members, Evaristo Moya Moya, Antonio Gomez and Alfredo Espinosa Perez. Full names this time.

Current Player of the Year Antonio {now off 9, the lowest handicap in the society} started well and amassed 14 points on the front 9. This included pars on the 7th and 8th and a great birdie on the 9th. Would he win again, we all thought? The back 9, was however, was not to be as good, although he did have a par on the 12th. Alfredo, who is playing his best golf ever, did better. Even taking into account blobs on the 1st and 3rd, , his front 9 included, par 3's on the uphill 5th, another on the long 8th and a par 5 on the mammoth 9th. His back 9 started with another blob, but got back onto track with a par on the tricky 12th. . More pars were scored on the 14th and the short 17th. Even with all these his total of 31 could only give him 3rd place. He does, however, go away with a Crystal Block with his name on for Best Front 9. His handicap will be reduced to 14. Muy Bien! Now we come to Evaristo, playing off his best handicap to date,19. He also commenced with a blob and like his amigos, he had pars to come on the long and windy 6th and the 8th. His back 9 started with a great par 3, followed with a blob and then the icing on the cake, a fantasic birdie on the 12th.. His total gives him the personalized Runner Up Crystal Block, a reduced handicap and even though it's not the usual for players to win more than 1 prize,sometimes it cannot be helped. As a result he also wins Antonio's gift of Menu del Dia at the El Mirador de Lucia . A real treat!!With the Mirador currently closed this has been changed ,again thanks to Antonio, to La Finca,Algorfa.

Our next group out were Dave Begg, Les Rowlands, Gary Liney and Keith Fewkes. Lets start with Les, who had a steady opening front 9 and started the 10th with a par.. We can say, that he went all day without going into a single bunker. A feat not often achieved. Playing partner Dave, told Les that he had had better days{ perhaps not in those exact words, but that was what he meant}. It's strange, but exactly 12 months ago, our little friend Mr Blobby spent some time in the cold ,snowy yet beautiful county of Yorkshire. It was here, infact, he was measured and fitted for his personal, tailored Santa Outfit. Therefore isn't it wonderful, that he will be able to meet up with some old friends, as Dave easily won him for this coming month! Somehow I think he had been under orders from Maria to bring him home. We have no concerns re the drinks problem, as we all know Dave only participates at certain times!!! We won't mention how many times!! Bring him back safely, Dave!!

Next pairings were neighbours Gary and Keith. Gary's handicap has slowly been coming down and stood at 16 at the beginning of play. He blistered the front 9 with 3 pars and a whopping score of 19 points. Even with a blob on the 12th he had a grand total of 34 at the end. This would be enough for him to be awarded with the prestigious Winner's Monthly Trophy, a personalized engraved Crystal Block and a reduction of 2 on his handicap. Something I know he is always endeavouring to achieve. Well done Gary. Keith, he informed me, had a wonderfull day. His par 3th being his highlight. On the day, he played to his handicap. Muy bien,mi amigo.

Last but not least, were Keith and Diane Clarke, Chris Fair, (C of C&A) and Andy Coe. Diane now off 18, scored well on holes 1 to 9 and went even better on the 10th with a great par 3. Bellissimo! She finished with 5 points on the final 2 holes and a par on the 17th. This gave her the Best Back 9 award. Due to the fact a player can't win the Bunker Award on 2 consecutive months, Diane will this receive the hopefully, fully repaired, Bunker Club Truck. Thanks Andy! We were all happy to see Keith playing again this month and his total, meant his handicap would stay at 22. Well played, young man. Keith wins the Sorteo for Alfredo's gift {owner of Vai Ven, Bar and Cafeteria ,Bigastro} of tapas para dos. Once again our thanks to Alfredo. Finally, we come to Chris and Andy. Last month's winner Chris playing off 12, had a strange day. If he had a plan, he told me it worked. He scored well on the opening 6 holes gaining 8 points.This included a par on the 4th.His final score however, means that he will get back 1 on his handicap, which will now be 13. Perhaps his episode with Mr Blobby had an adverse effect on his usual high scoring game. Andy had a blistering start with a par on the extremely tricky 1st. And on the 5th he did it again In the Sorteo, he also gets the special gift from Lo Rubes, Garden Centre. Gracias Pepe. Jackie will be very pleased.

Once again, I would like to thank Diane for her usual rapid and efficient marking of the cards.

Could I please also ask each player to have their own card if possible, or at the most only 2 players per card. This makes it a lot easier for Diane. Thanks in anticipation of your co'operation.

Verdict.

At last night's meeting and presentation evening, a detailed investigation into the recent lapse in Mr Blobby's conduct was taken. A decision to banish C & A to the colonies (New Zealand) for the period of 6 months was handed out.

With cries of ...is this a Kangaroo court, C & A ask for the following statement to be heard.

We shall of course be appealing against the injustice of a guilty verdict and a 6 month sentence to the colonies.

In my defence I would like to point out some misunderstood actions....

1. This was the first time I had met Mr Blobby (normally my golf is too good!!)

2. I was brought up to 'take as you find' and, when he suggested a short trip out to Hondon Los Nieves we thought it sounded like fun.

3. It wasn't until after we'd got into the place that the trouble started.

4 Surely people who were aware of his 'problems' should have done the responsible thing and given us some warning.

We were completely taken in. Let this be a lesson for future custodians.............

Appeal decision.

In light of this appeal, and the promise of free and endless technical assistance to my new mobile, the sentence is reduced to 4 months.

What is an ASBO anyway?

We understand, that some or our readers may not be aware of the meaning of the initials ASBO.

It is also true, that depending of the country you are in or the culture you are from, there may well be different meanings.

In order to clarify the situation here are some definitions from various areas of the world.

An Anti Social Behaviour Order or ASBO is a civil order made against a person,or possibly Mr Blobby, who has been shown, on the balance of evidence, to have engaged in anti-social behaviour.

I think we'll go for the UK version.
The question is, is there enough evidence to issue Mr. Blobby with an ASBO?

At it again ?

We have just been received this picture of our little friend.

A full investigation is currently underway, as to whether he was there by himself or was he, infact, aided and abetted by his hosts. Of course, in Spain, we are only allowed legally to name them with their initials.....C and A.

Considering his recent behaviour, when last in a similar location and the possible consequencies of breaking his terms and conditions of release, this investigation is being taken very seriously! Those also possibly implicated should be aware, they may be contacted to ascertain their version of the events that have taken place. Unless some favourable reports are forthcoming it may deem necessary to issue Mr. B with an ASBO.

A list of possible charges will be publish at a later stage.

Wednesday 12th October .

Sometimes a little local knowledge as they say, is a good thing. If I'd only known that the 12th of October in Spain was a special day, I don't think I would of booked this day, as our monthly get together. We benefit a lot by having more than a couple of Spanish members, but on this occasion, it was with lots of regret, that they couldn't play and of course, reduced our numbers.

As well as no Spanish members, we were without several ex pat Spanish residents. Nevertheless, with Antonio winning a lot recently, it gave someone else the chance to win. Every cloud has a silver lining as they say.

Off bright and early were Andy Coe and yours truly Les playing with Bob Brownlie and Annaliese.Bob unfortunately succumbed to not feeling well and retired later. We hope he is now feeling much improved and look forward to seeing them both at the next meeting.

Well, it's safe to say we both didn't fair too good on the 1st ,but we did manage a point each. Andy produced a 4 on the long 2nd to achieve 2 more points and when he reached the par 5 5th was swinging well. A 4 pointer did not worry him, as he produced a great par on the 167 metre 6th,giving him a total at this stage of 11. Would he win? As for me, I was steady and put in a front 9, total of 12. Now for the home turn and the back 9. Andy surprised me with a blob on the 10th, but got back to his scoring ways with 10 more points on the next 4 holes. Unfortunately, he just missed out on the winner's trophy coming home as Runner Up. Even with, or should I say, despite of all the bunker shots. However, with that number of shots in and out of the sand, he goes away the this months. Bunker Club Award. Perhaps Andy Coe Construction (Tel. no.619573566.... all jobs considered) can have a look at the condition of the Digger truck.

I was happy with my overall play and would like to thank Andy for a great day's golf and good company.

The next group out were Chris Fair and Gary Liney, playing with Billy Foat and Peter Audoire.

Where or who do I start with first. Peter, who was last month's winner of the tasty Menu del Dia from El Mirador De Lucia, this time goes away with tapas, courtesy of Alfredo at Vai Ven, Bigastro .A lucky man indeed! I say lucky ,in fact, he also has the opportunity to entertain our friend Mr Blobby. Lets hope he has not reverted back to his old habits ,Mr Blobby that is not Peter,especially after Chris and Anne Fair had tempted him at one of the local bodegas. As Jackie will agree, it doesn't take much. By the way she is organising cage fighting for him! again Mr Blobby not Peter. Chance to get rid of his excess energy! More news later! Any way, back to the golf. I think it would be suffice to say Mr Blobby went to the correct player! His playing partner, Billy, is this month's winner of that much sort after prize from Antonio Gomez at El Mirador De Lucia . Maybe I'll get it next time!! Muy bien, Billy!

Gary Liney is one of the players who always has a good chance of winning the Longest Drive Award,as long as he keeps his ball on the fairway. A feat not always done by the big hitters. However, on this day, he did manage it and will be presented with a floral gift made up by Eva and Pepe at Lo Rubes Garden Centre. A prize Karen will appreciate,as it needs no cleaning or polishing. His final total of 27 took him into 3rd place. This included par 4's on the 288mtr 3rd, again on the 8th as well as the long 332 mtr 16th. Well done!

Now we come to this months Winner,Chris Fair. Was it the practice on the driving range that did it this month, or perhaps the secret 1 on 1 coaching he received from Mr Blobby? We may never know.

We do know one thing and that is his total of 31 takes his handicap down 2 points and he will now play off 12. Blimey, I can hear him say. It was his consistency on the front 9, that laid the foundation for his excellent round. The climax perhaps was the very long 14th,485 mtrs par 5. He ended the day with a par 4. He will be presented with the prestigious Monthly Trophy, donated many years ago by Pepe ,now of Lo Rubes Garden Centre. Well deserved, Chris! An excellent day's golf!

By the way the 12th October was El Dia de Hispanidad, a day linked in some areas with memories of Columbus, as Sheila's Spanish teacher informed her.

We hope to see all the players who couldn't manage to play this month as soon as possible.

A big welcome back to all our members and those who read our blog to keep up with Bigastro Golf Society. With most vacations now over and nearly all visitors gone for another year, we gathered together in Molina Segura, the home of Altorreal Golf, on a lovely warm September morning.

We were met by Lola and her team for our 1^st match of the season with her usual kind yet professional greeting. The buggies were lined up outside the office, the keys were handed over to me ready to pass on to the players upon their arrival.

As well as members, we also say a big hello to guests Darren Garton and Gordon Oliver, friends of Bob Brownlie. They will play for the Best Guest Award.

However, before we begin our report, let me say a few words to our Sponsors. In no particular order, our thanks once again goes to Alfredo {owner of Vai Ven, Bar and Cafeteria ,Bigastro} for his Tapas prize each month. Something I know is well appreciated by the winners and partners.

Next, we thank Antonio for his gift of Menu del Dia at the El Mirador De Lucia. A real treat!!

Pepe from the Garden Centre, Lo Rubes tells me this year, they would like us to give a special gift each month rather than the voucher, as in earlier years. We look forward to seeing it. Again to all our sponsors ,a heartfelt thank you.

Not all members were available to play today and we look forward to see them in the future. First off as a 2 ball were yours truly, Les and Winner of last year's Players of the Season Trophy, Antonio. Will he inspire me or will I bring him down to my level !?! The former I hope!

Well, I started slowly, but blimey what was going on! With a single point on the opening hole, I went on to get a par 4 on the 2^nd with 4 great strokes,something of a rarity. Surprise, surprise, it only happened again on the downhill 4^th. By the 7^th hole I had amassed a total of 14 points. Hang on though, it wouldn't and didn't last with 4 blobs on the trot. What had happened to the inspiration? I did recover a bit and came home with a total of 27, winning the Best Front 9 Crystal Block. Enough of me,although it's not usual for me to have done enough to write about! Need to make the most of it. Antonio's new handicap of 11 couldn't slow him down, as I watched in awe. Despite his no score on hole 1, he went from strength to strength. His final score of 33 would give him the Winner's Trophy, as well as reducing his 11 down to 9. Can anyone topple the champion? To Antonio, my thanks for the inspiration and the day's golf. Muchos gracias mi amigo.

Next out were Scotty, Chris Fair and Gary Liney. Gary was even sporting his new shorts..... very smart!

Scotty, now playing off 22, started well with 2 points. The opening hole is always tricky, as discussions have to be made if a visit to the range or the bar (coffee) has to be made. Let's say, he had some good holes and some not so good. On the day, he came home with the Longest Drive Award, a special gift from Lo Rubes Garden Centre for his effort on the 15^th. Unfortunately his total means his handicap goes back up to 23. Is he upset? No se!

Gary was to have more success,especially on Nearest the Pin, holes 8 and 17. Winning 2, as we all know, means that Gary will hand 1 back and he will walk away on the day with 2 green fees with buggy, courtesy of Altorreal. This is valid until the end of December. His par on 8 was followed on the long, dog legged ,water hazard 9 with a par 5. Fantastico! He will keep his handicap of 16. Next in this trio comes Chris, now off 13, a score that reflects his previous good play. After today sadly, his future handicap is 14. Scores over and including 15, but under 20, gives a player 1 back.

Mr Blobby will be very happy, as he prepares for a trip a round the world,with stops off in the far east.

Some one will have to break the news to him (Mr Blobby, that is, not Chris ),that his passport will not allow him to gain entry to these romantic climes, due to his earlier misdemeanors. Chris, also has a share of this month's Bunker Club Award.

Now for Bob Brownlie and his guests, Bob wins The Best Back 9 Crystal Block. Bob,taking care of Darren and Gordon, had a great day with 2 even good halves of golf. Darren win The Best Guest Bottle of Wine. We look forward to Darren and Gordon joining us again when they are next here.

Last, but not not least, we have Keith and Diane Clarke, playing with Billy Foat and Peter Audoire.

Keith, playing for only his 2^nd time in a few month's comes home as the month's Runner Up. Muy bien.

Keith had a par on the 4 which is a difficult hole. Personally, I find the hardest hole on the course is the 11^th. A long hole, which starts downhill, swings to the right goes up hill and then over some bunkers. Keith had a par on this one too! A great hole indeed. He even managed somehow to share the Bunker Club Award with Chris. Diane scored well on the opening 5 holes with good par on the 4^th. With her handicap of 18, she had a very good round.

Last pair out were Billy and Peter. Peter put in a great 3 on the uphill 5 and although Billy started slowly, he came alive on the 5^th,,scoring on all remaining 14 holes. A feat not achieved by many. Courtesy of our raffle for awards not actually won on the day, Peter gets Menu Del Dia, El Mirador De Lucia and Billy gets Tapas from Vai Ven. Both tickets were drawn by she who must be obeyed, Sheila.

The evening commenced with Antonio Joaquin presenting each of our sponsors with a plaque.

Joaquin expressed thanks to Alfredo and the Vai Ven Staff for all their support with a commemorative plaque.

Life is made easier, when difficult decisions are made re. the marking of cards and the adjustment of handicaps. This system has now been in place since Sept 2008 and Diane Clarke here, receives a plaque expressing our thanks for her continued diligence with the cards. We really appreciate all the work she does.

Last year, after suggestions by several players, we started off a new and unique award, Mr Blobby. Mr Blobby was found and delivered to us by Bob Brownlie and tonight we expressed our thanks to Bob by presenting him with a special momento for seeking and finding our little friend, who we have now adopted into our family! For better or worse!!

I say, our little friend, but as you know, if you have been reading our blog(www.etc), he has not always been well behaved! He has had a problem with....... well what can I say..........alcohol! One of his worst episodes was up near the mountains, the other side of Orihuela. He has tried to make amends and tonight, speaking through his official spokesperson (Sheila), he would like to thank his host on that occasion,Jackie, for not having him incarcerated.

Jackie came up and received a gift from Sheila and Mr Blobby.

Our gratitude also goes to Lo Rubes Garden Centre, Pepe and Eva for their sponsorship over the years.

They needed to be in the shade !

Now for the main part of the evening The Players Awards.

Last month, we held our final match at our home course,Vistabella. The event was, as in previous years, sponsored by the Ayuntamiento of Bigastro.

Return of Mr. Blobby news!!

Sorry about the absence of news about our cherished friend. Whoever wonders if life as a pensioner is boring, can be reassured it definitely is not!!

Mr Blobby has also been enjoying an exciting lifestlyle with many loved friends. Mrs. B has been having a rest and from what she has to put up with, re. her hubby's antics, a well deserved one

Mr. Blobby had a very enjoyable meal recently with Graham,Rose, Peter and Maureen at Antonio's new restaurant and we were pleased to be told that his behaviour was impeccable. Food was good and Mr. Blobby recommends the restaurant to you. Also reasonable prices! Graham is well known for his superb cornish pasties and Mr. Blobby is hoping he may get a chance to visit Graham and Rose in the UK and taste these delicacies. A change from the Spanish Cuisine.

Travelwise, our friend has visited far and wide this year. He has been to Sevilla, Zaragoza, Torremolinos and Mallorca. He was not unduly concerned at news of ash cloud when in Mallorca! Looking at airport news to find out if he was to be stranded was something to smile about. A possibility for him and us to have a few more days holiday! Especially as the pool looked so inviting.

Couldn't take photos of bikini clad beauties he was ogling, as She, who must be obeyed, would not be impressed. As it happened, there was no delay and a return to mainland Spain was next on the agenda. Probably a good idea, as the 24 hour disco he visited was very tempting and we wouldn't want him returning to his wayward single days!! Mr. Blobby was back to home cooking and the wife!

He is also being influenced football wise and whilst spending time with our friends, has been an avid reader of the Plymouth Argyle programme. Nevertheless, his allegiances remain faithful to Manchester City F.C. and he still smiling after their recent successes!!

Bigastro pays homage to Seve

As a tribute to golf legend, Seve,or to give him his full name Severiano Ballesteros Sota, both Spanish and British members of Bigastro Golf Society donned their caps in his memory on the 1st tee at Altorreal Golf Club in Murcia.

As per usual, our host Lola had everything we need for our monthly day out organised and ready. She even took the photo on the 1st tee.

Off to start were 2 ball pair Les and Keith Fewkes. Keith had a great opening 9, eventually picking up this month's Best Front 9 engraved Crystal Block. His par 4 on the downhill 2nd and his par 3 on the 8th obviously helped. His putting also must have been amongst the best on the day. Well done, amigo. As for yours truly,I was pleased with my golf, especially the back 9, coming in with a total of 27 on the day and dare I say, no bunkers. Blimey I here you say.

Next our were the 3 amigos, Alfredo, Evaristo and Antonio. Low handicapper Antonio,11 at the last count, had a quiet day by his standards,but did manage pars on the 4th,5th and the 13th. He still has a chance of retaining his Player of the Year status. Alfredo had a blistering start, amassing a total for his front 9 of 21. Pars were had on holes,4,6,7,8 and 9. His back 9 however, improved his score by only 14. I say this only in comparison with the winner. This was to place him as Runner Up. His 14 included pars on the 11th and the 17th. As well as all this, he even gets his own prize of tapas at the Vai Ven Bar, Bigastro. This is sponsored by Alfredo himself! Evaristo Moya Moya was to have his best round with the society. He started with the worse possible score of a blob, a zero, but this was soon forgotten, as he turned it round on the 10th. He had a score of 20! His 3 pars ,holes 2,4 and the 7th being the highlight. It was his 15 points however on the back 9, which included 2 pars, that gave him his joint total of 35 with Alfredo and also the Winner's position. This win gives him the prestigious award for the first time and more importantly, his name on the Lo Rubes Garden Centre Winner's Trophy. Well done and congratulations from us all.

To some readers, the best front and back 9 winners had lower scores than the winner and runner up,but just as Man City won the Cup and a place in the champions league, it was Stoke, who were given their place in Europe for the cup as City could not pick up 2 euopean prizes!

I knew I could get that in somewhere !!

Out last were 4 ball Graham King,Billy Foat ,Peter Audoire and recently wed Gary Liney. Graham told me he had more successful golf days, but thoroughly enjoyed the day and is looking forward to taking Rose for menu del noche at our new sponsor's restaurant, El Mirador De Lucia at Mil Palmeras. This he won on hole 5 as nearest the pin. This is courtesy of Antonio Gomez. When I emailed Antonio for his reservation I had to ask for a table for 3, as they will be joined by our friend Mr Blobby. Graham is now responsible for Mr Blobby's special needs, which have already been explained to him and Rose. We are all confident he is in good hands and Mrs. B has given her approval!!

Billy did his best on the day with a more successful front 9, than back 9! He takes home this month's Bunker Club Digger and a gift voucher for Pauline from Lo Rubes Centro Jardineria of Benejufar.

Last months winner Peter also performed better on his opening 9 holes and had a great par on the 2nd.

Last but not least we come to Gary, with a total of 29 points. He comes home in 3rd place and has also won the Best Front 9 engraved Crystal Block. Muy bien!

Well, where do I start. For some strange reason our December report, even though it made our blog and The Leaders internet web page, it strangely didn't make their newspaper. The Winner, if any one was not aware, was Scotty. Again, well done. This of course was followed by January's Winner Billy Foat. Congratulations to you both.

Again, we had the pleasure of greeting Antonio, who we thought was recovering from his open heart surgery last November. Little did we know, that he is obviously made of sturdier stuff !

First off at our earlier tee off time of 9.09 were Alfredo, Billy, Andy and Antonio. Our Spanish amigos always prefer to go out 1st as they have work commitments. Something that most of us don't have to think about. Alfredo, fresh from his visit to Madrid to see his beloved Real had a slow start, but did have a great par 4 on the 8th. His back 9,which included pars on the 16th and 17th earned him the Runner Up Trophy. Muy Bien. Andy's second half wins him the Best Back 9 award with a great final hole par. Next, we come to Last month's winner Billy. After the highs, come the lows and his score this month cancels out the point he was deducted from his handicap last month. He will also meet up with an old friend, Mr Blobby, who after his visit with Billy and Pauline to the Costa Brava last year is keen to be with a strong host, who will help him stay on the straight and narrow! Now for the surprise. Nobody was expecting Antonio to find his golfing feet so quick, especially as his score for last month gave him points back on his handicap. Again, little did we know. His round of 33, now playing off 11, keeps him in contention for Player Of The Year. For the record he had pars on the 6th,9th, and the 17th, Antontio. Fantastico, especially for someone recuperating after a major heart operation.

Next our were Les, Gary and Dave Begg. If only I (Les) could put 2 good halves together. At least this month I didn't get the Bunker Club,although up to hole 10, I was in the lead. This prize goes to Gary,who came up on the rails to grasp it on the last few holes. His opening 9,with pars on the 2nd,the long 5th,and the tricky 8th,made me think I was in the company of this month's winner, but the bunkers were to change my mind. He does however go away with The Best Front 9 Crystal Block. An early wedding present.

Last in the team was Dave Begg. Well, he said to me after, 'I've had better scores,but still a great day!' We all aspire to that being the main aim of the day.

Last out were Diane ,Michelle, Rob and Barry. Barry will be awarded the Longest Drive prize for hole 14, as well as a par 5, a feat he also had on the 12th. He will now make the trip to the Garden Centre with his gift voucher from Lo Rubes Centro Jardineria of Benejufar. There is also a well, deserved treat for Michelle, who wins Alfredo's Special prize for hole 2. A suprise gift from friend, player and sponsor Alfredo. Rob started well with 2 points on the opening hole, and improved even more on the 16th with 3 points and more highlights in between . Last but not least we have Diane. She wins the Nearest The Pin on the 15th and will get the much sort after prize of tapas at the Vai Ven Bar, Bigastro sponsored by Alfredo. Diane also wins the Specsavers Award for her unique driving. All in all, it was a day to remember in more ways than one!!

Bigastro Golf Society

Well, it was that time again,a New Year and a chance to get rid of any extra pounds gained over the festive period.

We all met at Altorreal in time,which was just as well as the admin at the course had a different tee off time than we had. After they had realized their mistake, we took to the back 9 first to start at 9.30am. This caused the usual confusion, when marking the scores for the 1st!

Although small in numbers due to holidays etc, we enjoyed the day and there were big smiles and a round of applause, when Antonio Gomez turned up to play. Antonio has had major heart surgery back only in November and speaking as one who had had the same operation 5 years previous, I was amazed at his quick and safe recovery. A testimony to the Spanish Health Service!

1st off were Keith and Barry together with Diane. Keith started off with a great front 9, earning him 13 points, but he tailed off in the latter stages. Nevertheless he still came away with Alfredo's Special Prize for the nearest the pin on the 17th. Well Done, mi amigo! What the prize will be is, as always, up to Alfredo. Diane was to have a low scoring day, however her play was better than her points indicated. She will also be awarded the Longest Drive prize for hole 15 and will now make the trip to the Garden Centre with her gift voucher from Lo Rubes Centro Jardineria of Benejufar. Barry started off with a great par 4 and came home with a good score. He will also receive this month's Best Back 9 Award.

Next was Les and Antonio. Les did well on holes 1 to 9 where he wins the Nearest The Pin on the 15th and will get the much sort after prize of tapas at the Vai Ven Bar, Bigastro. This is, of course, sponsored by Alfredo. Sheila will be itching to get there. He also recorded 2 pars. Blimey! As to Antonio, due to his previous operation, we took things slowly. As most will know, I drive slow anyway, but today I had a good excuse. His direction is still there and time will soon make him as good as his handicap of 11. As always, it was a pleasure to play with him and we both appreciated practicing each other's language.

Last out, were the 4 ball of Scotty, Michelle, Rob and Billy. Billy was to benefit from playing with similar handicap players and was to come home as this month's Winner. Together with the magnificent Trophy donated by Pepe from the Garden Centre, Lo Rubes, all those years ago, he will also receive a crystal trophy engraved with his name. His handicap will, of course, be reduced.

Congratulations from us all to Billy. Rob had a good day and was hitting the ball further than he had for some time. He told me later, over a coffee, how much he had enjoyed the day, as we all did. Michelle was this month to have her best day out with the society and romped home in 2nd place,Runner Up. She like Billy will have a personal engraved crystal trophy. Last, but by no means least, we come to last month's winner Scotty. Scotty, although not the outright winner, will get this month's Best Front 9 Award, as well as having the opportunity of wining and dining Mr Blobby. A word of caution! Remember, he is trying to amend his ways after his recent bad behaviour and we rely on Scotty's good influence!

BIGASTRO GOLF SOCIETY

November 10th 2010.

Well, it looks like we're in for a good winter, as quite a few of us are still in shorts. It may be a little cold, when we all left our homes in Bigastro, but when we arrived at Murcia the sun was out.

As usual, our thanks to the ever efficient Lola and her team for the ease in which we can turn up and just concentrate on our golf. The buggies are all lined up and the marker pins are on the relevant tees. The society, although small compared with some, exists with a great friendship between its members. A testament to the help everyone gives to each other. As they say, always a pleasure never a chore!

Tee off was at 9.45, so every one had had a good nights sleep and was raring to go. First off as a 2 ball was Les and Gary Liney. Gary, a winner on 4 previous occasions started with 3 well played 5s, earning him 6 quick points. His opening 9 holes gave him 14 in total. He started the back 9 with a par 3, but didn't reach the heights of the front 9. For me, I can at last inform everyone of some good news. No bunkers, 3 pars, only 2 blobs. Blimey, I'm shaking just writing this down. My 30 points on the day even won the Trophy and at last, my handicap will come down.

Next out were Evaristo, Antonio, Peter and Michelle. Evaristo will be this month's Runner Up with his score of 27. Well done, mi amigo. Antonio,also a winner 4 times and numerous winner of The Longest Drive had in his words, a bad day, un dia muy mal. He will, however be awarded the Longest Drive prize again this month. He will now make the trip to the Garden Centre with his gift voucher from Lo Rubes Centro Jardineria of Benejufar. To top this off, he will be Mr Blobby's home for a few weeks. We must stress to him, Mr. B's drink problem. Peter playing a round with Michelle {Maureen, please note, we only mean golf} had a steady day and will even get a point back on his handicap. Sorry Peter. Michelle finished with her best score for a while. Again, well done.

On the tee for the 3rd match were Alfredo Espinosa, Billy, Keith and Diane. 3 times winner Alfredo had a day to remember. A good round of 27 meant he was number 3 on the day, but unfortunately for Alfredo, the day will be remembered for other reasons. No, not his par 4 on the 2nd, neither his other 2 pars on the 10th and the 17th. He will also be rewarded this months Bunker Club Truck. However, it was the splitting of his trousers, early in his round, that some will never forget! We now know what a Spaniard wears underneath them. Diane, another 4 times winner, came in winning Best Font 9. Her 3 pars on the run ,2, 3 and 4 another on the 8th were to be her highlights of the day. Muy bien Senora! Unfortunately, Keith had to retire. We look forward to seeing him next time! Last in this group was Billy. Billy nearly won the nearest the pin for the 2nd month, but just missed out. He did achieve a par 3 on the 5th and will be awarded The Best Back 9 crystal block at the next presentation evening.

Last, but not least, were Scotty, Andy ,Rob and Barry. 3 times winner, Andy with his 2 on the 5th, wins the Nearest The Pin on the 5th and will get the much sort after prize of tapas at the Vai Ven Bar, Bigastro, which of course, is sponsored by Alfredo. Yes I did say 2. I wonder how long it will be before we get a hole in 1 ! The inaugural winner of Alfredo's Especial Prize goes to Scotty for his par on the 17th. This prize will be chosen by Alfredo himself. Barry, now playing off 11, after his tremendous rounds in the last couple of months, also had a 3 on the 5th as we would expect.

All in all, it was a day to remember. Well, I would say that, wouldn't I.

MADRE MIA

Well, it would seem that Mr. Blobby needs to hang his head in shame after abusing Jackie and Andy's hospitality!! We have received a note from his latest resting place.

It says.

Hi Les,

I am sorry to have to write this letter to you Les, but under no circumstances do I want Mr Blobby in my home again.

The thought of reading on made us tremor.

I like having guests in my home and pride myself as being a good host, but that midget was a nightmare, as a guest in our home I welcomed him and gave him food, but when Andy came to show him around, he took one look at the Bodega and locked himself inside, he was drunk for the period, he would not eat and he would not wash, the smell from the Bodega was on par to the pig farms, and his language was not repeatable, that person has a major problem. He was late back because Andy had to take the door off to get him out in the end., and it was left to me to clean him up, I just threw him in the pool, he was just damned lucky I fished him out.

What atrocious behaviour!

If and a big if, there is a chance he might return, then he will go to our local sheep farm for the duration of. Mrs Blobby wants a medal and Noel Edmunds has a lot to answer for.

Mr. Blobby has obviously got a problem and any advice, anyone can give, will be greatly appreciated. We feel that in future Mrs. B should always accompany him, as she will have a calming influence on him!

Mr. B has asked us to pass on his apologies to Jackie and Andy and he looks forward to be able to do this in person in the near future. Also, he has offered to pay for any damages he may have incurred and hopes he has not caused any further upset to anyone enjoying a quiet drink in the Bodega.

Lets hope this is a thing of the past.

BIGASTRO GOLF SOCIETY

On Sabado, 23 Octubre. there was a a joint venture between Vistabella Golf ,Bigastro Ayuntamiento and Bigastro Golf Society. The day was called a Jornado de Golf de Bigastro.

Before the day commenced, we received a very warm welcome from Pablo Riestra,General Magager, Vistabella Golf. Following this all present were put into 3 groups. One group had the chance to go round the actual course in a buggie accompanied by Pablo himself. For most, if not all, this was a first time experience. Another group were given instructions on the art of putting. Special thanks to society member Evaristo Moya for his teaching and liaison skills, not to mention his putting! Next, but not least were further instructions on how to hit a golf ball with the club! Not as easy as it sounds, as many were to discover!! Simon Foster, the resident Golf Professional impressed us all with an exhibition of his golfing skills. Pablo also explained the popular Spanish game of Pista de Padel. Very interesting !

Complimentary refreshments were available and much appreciated.

We were all very grateful to Pablo for all his hard work in organising this very enjoyable event with the co'operation of Raul Valerio Medina Lorente. Alcalde de Bigastro and members of the Bigastro Ayuntamiento.

It was also very encouraging to see so many of the youth of Bigastro participating in the day. Together with members of Bigastro Golf Society, our thanks go to them for making all of our day most memorable.

A Professional Touch

What a great day to get up early, to see the sun shining in mid October, not to have to go to work. It's a great life !

This would be our 1st match at our closest course of the new season. They must be getting used to us now, as our buggie keys are handed over as soon as I arrive. Tee off was 09.30 as the 16 players gathered in and around the clubhouse. One of the most convenient things about Vistabella is that every thing is nearby, being adjacent to the club. The sun was attempting to squeeze through the clouds and we were all assured that the factor 25 was not going to go to waste.

Last month's winner Chris Fair was eager to get off, but would have to wait for the 1st 4 ball go off which included 2 of the Gibb family.

Jordan G ,who in the future, we will welcome as a member, together with his sister Danielle are playing as guests today. Both Jordan and Danielle are extremely talented golfers. More about them later. Playing with them were 2 of our Spanish members,Alfredo Espinosa and Evaristo Moya Moya. Alfredo now playing off 18 scored a great par on the 272 metres 8th with a 4, and was to repeat the feat on the 17th. He also receives the Best Back 9 Medal. Well done mi amigo. Evaristo was to play a little better today and in fact will see his handicap reduced to 20. A reward for his score of 30 points. His Back 9 was formidable indeed with pars on the 10th and 17th as well as a fantastic birdie 4 on the long 485 metres 14th par 5. He will also be awarded the Longest Drive prize for this hole. He will now make the trip to the Garden Centre with his gift voucher from Lo Rubes Centro Jardineria of Benejufar. Pepe,the owner is a fellow Barca fan,so they will have lots to talk about.

Our guest Danielle, the youngest member of the Gibb 4, as I think they will become known , plays off 2! Yes, it's not a miss print. I did say 2. Even with this handicap and playing off the yellow markers she came home with 32 points and with our handicap system will play off 1 next time out. If she get to scratch, she will play off the whites. Her total of 32 included 2 pars on the out 9 and 2 on the back nine.

We all look forward to be able to see and play with him in the future if he is available and feel honoured to have him as a member and friend. It's my turn next!For our day, we knock his handicap to silly numbers to give us a chance, but its advantageous to our game to be able to see and play with such a talented player.

Next was yours truly, Antonio Gomez, Barry Gibb, (good, but not as good) and Andy Coe. I was very pleased with my day returning home with 29 points. Andy finished well with a par on the 17th. Barry had pars on the 4th, 6th, and the 9th. For this he receives the Best Front 9 Medal. on the 16th and 18th. This means his handicap will now be 11. Antonio, was to be the day's Runner Up with 6 pars,but the shot of the day was his chip in off the green on the 15th, to give him a 2. His handicap will now be 9. Antonio ,a big hitter, will also get this month's inauguration award of the Spec Saver Mira Glasses.

Next off the tee was Chris Fair, Peter Audoire, Rob Diaper and Scottie.

Chris on the day, playing off 17 was to put in a great card, with 5 pars on the opening 9 holes. This will get him this month's Winner's Trophy for the 2nd month in a row. In future his handicap will be 14. Muy Bien Chris. Peter didn't do quite so well and now has the chance to entertain for the next few weeks our special friend......Mr Blobby. Look after him Peter! He's has a long hot summer with she who must be obeyed and is looking forward to a break!. I wonder where he might go? Although Scottie had a good day with 29 points and a couple of pars, I am told, he did get in to the habit of hitting his ball into the water and for this he receives this seasons 2nd new prize of the Booby Ring. I hope it fits and you don't have to rub it to get it on ! Rob was playing his 1st match for a few months, but despite lack of practice he did do well.

Last out were the last of the Gibb4, mum Michelle , Diane Clarke, Billy Foat and Keith Clarke. Michelle played well, but like most mums had to make sure the kids were all right first. She will take home the Digger this month, as a reward for all the Bunker Shots. Billy, did very well indeed and for his score of 30 points, his handicap will go down by 1. He even wins the Nearest The Pin on the 15th and will get the much sort after prize of tapas at the Vai Ven Bar, Bigastro, which of course, is sponsored by Alfredo. Keith had a great round and his score of 28 was well deserved. He had a great par on the 2nd. Last, but definitely not least, was Diane. She too had a par on the 2nd, but was to go 1 better and to get another on the downhill, but windy 6th.

Once again I would like to thank her for her rapid turnaround of the score cards. It's always interesting for me to see the mistakes made by players and myself, as we concentrate on our golf and not the card. Thanks Diane.

Good news for Mr. Blobby and his better half. After being incarcerated in a car boot, they were very excited and honoured to be invited to accompany Billy and Pauline on their holiday in Lloret de Mar.

They had a very enjoyable time and enjoyed the opportunity to top up their tans in the northern climes of Spain. Billy and Pauline are renowned for their long walks and Mr. and Mrs. B were happy to join in their fitness regime.

After a few weeks back in Bigastro, they are sadly losing their Liverpudlian accent, but ending on a positive note, they are still celebrating Spain's fantastic success in the World Cup.

Bigastro Mayor and Barry of Chuckle Brothers fame meet.

One of the highlights of the evening was the meeting of Bigastro Mayor Raul Valerio and member Barry Elliott, or Little Chuckle, as we all know and love him. We were very honoured to have them present both as guests and friends. It was also a great pleasure to have Anne, Barry's wife present.

Many thanks to everyone for making our end of season presentation such an enjoyable and successful evening. Everyone who played the last match of the season was pleased to receive their awards, donated by Bigastro Ayuntamiento. Dave Cosford. was presented with his trophy prior to the night, as he is now away in Marrakesh. He appreciated receiving his first ever golf award! The evening was also an opportunity to welcome new members Dave Cosford, Barry and Michelle Gibb. We look forward to playing many gameswith them in the future.

LA GALA DEL DEPORTE

Bigastro 2010

Bigastro Golf Soceity enjoyed a very pleasant evening teaching the complexities of golf to the youth of the town. They also appreciated the valuable assistance of Pablo (manager of Vistabella Golf Course) and Simon (resident golf pro). There was an exceptionally good turn out and at the final presentation, Raul, our mayor, expressed his great appreciation for everyone´s efforts. Thanks also go to Ases Deportes, Orihuela for donating 3 medals and to Vistabella Golf Course for the 3 prizes of golf tuition won by the best entrant in each of the 3 sections. Diane impressed our Spanish neighbours with her command of the Spanish language, when she thanked everyone and by the end of the evening Evaristo, Alfredo, Keith, Diane, Chris, Pete, Scottie and Les were ready for a well deserved drink!

Diane Triumph's

The weather was perfect for our day out at Altorreal. This was our 1st time here since March. Now, unlike then, most players were wearing shorts. Summer at last! We thought it would neve come.

We arrived with plenty of time and were greeted with the usual professionalism of Lola and her team. After a short time, either on the practice range or taking a café con leche in the bar, the players assembled at the 1st tee.

Away 1st were Alfredo, Chris and Billy. Alfredo, now playing off 17, just missed out on the runners/up place on the countback system. He started well with pars at both the tricky 1st and the downhill 2nd. He started the back 9 with a par 3, 2 more on the 15th and 16th and again on the 17th, He wins the Best Back 9 Medal. Muy Bien Alfredo. Chris,19, his handicap not his age, played well with 2 even halves, but didn't reach the level he knows he can play. Billy,was to do a little better with a good 3 on the 5th. He goes away with the Best Front 9 Medal.

Next away were Evaristo, Gary, Les and Peter. Evaristo had a fantastico front 9, especially with a birdie 2 on the 5th. For this, he receives the Nearest The Pin prize. This is the much sought after prize of Tapas at the Vai Ven Bar, Bigastro, thanks to our sponsor Alfredo .Congratulations. If that was not enough, he had a par 3 on the 8th. The success was not to last however as the back 9 was not as good, but again well done Evaristo. Gary 18, again definately not his age, started with a great par 4, but like Chris, was not to play to his usual high standards. My playing partner Peter was great company as we chatted away thoughout the day. Perhaps if we both did a little less talking our scores may have been better, but I say what is the day out all about. For me it's all about having an enjoyable day out with good friends and if I can play well it's a bonus ! Oh, and I get this month's Bunker Club Medal!

Now it was the turn of Andy,Scotty,Diane and Antonio. Previous winner Andy had a steady round with 2 equal 9's. Scotty did well with a par on the 8th and again on the 17th. Scotty, like others had a par on the 8th and 17th With this he wins 1 of the Nearest the Pin Awards and will be able to present she who must be obeyed a garden centre gift voucher from Lo Rubes, Centro Jardineria of Benejufar. Well done mi amigo.

The next pair out probably had a different view on the day out than me. This is due to the fact that they both have a chance of always winning. Two talented golfers! This must make a difference or does it increase the pressure? Antonio, who is currently in the lead for Player Of The Season is the clubs lowest handicapper on 12. Mr Consistent had a par on the 4th, 2 more on the 11th and 12th and rounded his day off with a par on the 15th.. On this hole, he had the Longest drive and again wins Drinks and Tapas with our sponsors at La Tasca, situated en El Parque in Bigastro, Our thanks once again goes to the owner,Maria Newman . He was to finish off with the Runner /Up Medal. Now for this month's Winner,Diane Clarke . Her win takes her handicap down to 19. Looking at her card, I'm thinking blimey! Pars on the 1st and 2nd,just missing out on the 3rd and 4th, aswell as the 7th and 8th and another par on the 10th. Well done and thanks again from all of us for preparing and marking all the cards. Much appreciated!

Last out, but not least were Rob and Dave Cosford. Dave has played as a guest for the last couple of months and I am pleased to say he has accepted our invitation to became a member. Blobby goes to the Wedding

Mr. Blobby is very excited to be going not only to his first wedding, but also a trip to the UK. Quite by chance too, he met the new love of his life, prior to the wedding. Mrs. Blobby is looking forward to her life in Spain with Mr. B and joining him on his many trips. She will keep him in order! Also, he had a rendezvous with the bride, Rachel.. Les and Sheila's daughter looked beautiful and was very honoured to make Mr. Blobby's acquaintance.

Well done Mr. B for resisting the cake. He certainly was close to having a bite.

Carden Park, where the ceremony took place has 3 golf courses, but with such an eventful few days, there was no time for a round of golf. Nevertheless, he had a great time at the wedding and later, saw a few famous faces. Gareth Edwards, Welsh international rugby player, Mick McCarthy, Wolves manager, Robert Plant, super rock star from Led Zeppelin to name just a few. Mr. B was able to mix with the rich and famous. Fortunately, all this glamour has not gone to his head and you'll be pleased to welcome our unassuming friend back into the fold!

Listening to the 2 tenors in the evening was an experience not to be missed, culminating with Mr. Blobby and Mrs. B dancing the night away, with eyes only for each other. We are still wondering who was the happiest? Them or the bride and groom?

We all had a memorable and very happy time.

Bigastro Golf Society

Vistabella.

The weather was just right for shorts as we gathered outside the club house for coffees and to prepare for the day's golf. We were met by Pablo with his usual pleasant smile and the buggies were all lined up just waiting for us. Pablo´s usual professionalism. The best thing about this course is that for most of the players it is only a 15/20 minute journey.

1st away were Antonio and Alfredo, together with yours truly and Scotty. Antonio,now the Society's lowest handicap player playing off 12 did brilliantely to get par's on th 4^th, 5^th, 9^th and the 15^th. On the 12^th hole he had the Longest Drive and wins Drinks and Tapas with our sponsors at La Tasca, situated en El Parque in Bigastro. Our thanks, once again, goes to the owner Maria Newman. Alfredo was to come home with the same total as Antonio 27. He started off with a par 5 on the 1^st,and had 2 more on the 14^th and 15^th.Alfredo picks up this month´s Best Back 9 Medal. Muy Bien mi amigo. Scotty was the 3^rd player in this group to end up with 27 points. He did however on the day find himself in too many bunkers and will be rewarded with this month´s Bunker Club prize. As for me, at last all those recent days of practising on the range paid off, as I was to have my best round for nearly 2 years, picking up this month´s `Most Improved ´player award and I win a crystal trophy from Francisco Grau Jewellery, Bigastro. Muchos gracias Francisco. As well as the Best Front 9 Medal/(Blimey will it last!!!) I had a birdie on the 7^th.

Next out were Billy Foat and Peter Audoire, partnered with Andy Coe and Bob Brownlie. 27 seems to be the score today as Peter also scored it. He also wins 1 of the nearest the pin awards and will be able to present she who must be obeyed another garden centre gift voucher from Lo Rubes, Centro Jardineria of Benejufar. Billy played well, as he came home Runner Up with 31 points Again, well done Billy! Bob was not to repeat his feats of earlier months with a win, but did play with this month´s winner in Andy Coe.With a score of 31, his new handicap will be 23. Although he had pars on the 8^th and 16^th it was his constistency that won the day. Congratulations Andy!

Now to the the last group. Peter Gladwell, maked a welcome return, as well as Eric Warrilow playing with Rob Diaper and guest Dave Cosford. Rob wins 2 awards this month. He receives the Nearest The Pin prize. This is the much sought after prize of Tapas at the Vai Ven Bar, Bigastro, thanks to our sponsor Alfredo.

The other unfortunately is Mr Blobby. I´m sure you will look after him and treat him in the manner as he has been accustomed to.Photos are welcome for the blog. Peter had a par on the 3^rd and told me how much he had enjoyed the day. Eric had 2 even halves and scored well on the 5^th and 14^th. Last, but not least, guest Dave goes away with Best Guest of the day. Well done and we look forward to seeing him again.

Mr Blobby continues his exploration of Spain. For the last few days, he has holidayed in Albir, spending time in an excellent apartment. He even had his own room with 2 beds to choose from! He ate in a superb Indian restaurant and is probably more blobby than ever. Don´t worry about his health though! He is now on a strict diet, as well as going on a long walk to Altea. As you can see from the photos, he also spent some time relaxing in the jacuzzi and had a swim in the indoor pool. Unfortunately the weather wasn´t condusive for an outdoor swim and definately not beach weather. Mr. Blobby has asked me to pass on a request! His modesty was seriously compromised in the pool area and he would appreciate anyone who has some spare swimming trunks he could have.
Mr. Blobby is looking forward to his new home and is anticipating a good time and maybe some more exploring. He really appreciates his varied life and passes on muchos gracias!
PS Mrs Blobby did not loom into the horizon in Altea. Madre Mia! Where can she be?

Bigastro at Altorreal

The weather was nearly perfect for our day out at Altorreal. This time, unlike last year there was no one wearing shorts.
We arrive with plenty of time and we were greeted with the usual professionalism of Lola and her team.
This month we had 2 walkers, Antonio and Chris Fair. They were to be joined by Alfredo and Evaristo. A strong group. Chris started well, gaining 2 points on the 1st hole and had a great finish with a 3 on the tricky 17th. Antonio, now playing off 14, was again to have a fantastico day. Starting with 2 straight pars and a BIRDIE on the 9th was to see him come in with a magnificent score on thee opening 9 holes. He started the back 9 as expected with a par 3 on the 12th , 14th and finished his round off with a birdie. All this wins him this month's Winners Trophy. His handicap will now be 12. Evaristo also played well, especially on th epar 3's 8th and 17th, muy bien Evaristo. It seems the 8th was a good hole for this group with Alfredo also playing a par.He also had pars on the 14th and 17th. He also wins 1 of the Nearest The Pin awards and will be able to present she who must be obeyed a garden centre gift voucher from Lo Rubes, Centro Jardineria of Benejufar.
Next outwere yours truly, Dave Begg, Gary Liney and Andy Coe. As for me lets just say Mr Blobby will be looked after by Sheila and myself. Enough said. Dave didn't start very well, but did get better as the day went on. On the long par 5 9th he got the 5.The bck 9 was to prove well for him with more pars on the 11th, 12th and the 15th. On this hole he had the Longest Drive and wins Drinks And Tapas with our sponsors at La Tasca, situated en El Parque, Bigastro. Our thanks once again goes to the owner, Maria Newman. The 3rd groupwere Scotty, BillyFoat, Peter Audoire and the last 2 month's winner Bob Brownlie. Scotty had 2 even 9 holes and played to his handicap he also recieves the Nearest The Pin prize. This is the much sort after prize of Tapas at the Vai Ven Bar, Bigastro. Thanks to our sponsor Afredo. Congratulations...Billy had a great par 3 on the 5th but will get a point back on his handicap. Peter had a good day, coming home in 3rd place and picks up The Best Back 9 Medal. Well done Pete. Bob had pars on the 10th and 17th. However he couldn't make it a hatrick of wins and came home as this month's Runner-Up.
The last group consisted of Keith and Diane Clarke, Rob Diaper with guest Dave Cosford. Keith had 2 really good halves and in fact , wins the Best Front 9 Medal. Unfortunely, he also gets the Bunker Club Digger. Diane played her usual good golf with pars on the 5th , 8th and 17th and come home with a very credible 4th place. Rob finished the day well and looked after our guestfor the day Dave Cosford, who wins this month´s Best Guest award. This month´s `The Most Improved´player award goes to Peter Audoire and he wins a crystal trophy from Francisco Grau Jewellry, Bigastro. Muchos gracias Francisco.

Next Chapter in Mr. Blobby's Lifestyle

After quite a few strenuous months moving from various homes, Mr. Blobby decided to hitch a ride with Les and Sheila and visit Tenerife. After a good flight, he was happy to arrive at the hotel and find they were the only Brits. What a great opportunity to practise his Spanish. Something he needs to do living in Spain and no longer in UK. One problem! Unfortunately, there were no Mrs. Blobby's there. Mr. Blobby remains frustrated. Surely someone out there can find him the girl of his dreams! HELP!
First day he studied the map to do a bit of exploring. What a lot of choice! He visited Los Christiaños, Los Americaños, Las Gallettas and more.
The next day he spent an exhilerating day on the beach, but decided he was not quite ready for a dip in the sea! Can't say I blame him. I think we need a bit more sun!
You can´t visit Tenerife without a camel ride and Mr Blobby was to experience a rather precarious ride. Not for the faint hearted!
For 2 days he went off in a car hire to explore the rest of Tenerife. A fantastic island!
Finally it was time to celebrate Les´s birthday and Mr. Blobby enjoyed being on the stage with Les, cava and a few hundred Spaniards singing Feliz Cumpleaños. A great night out and a great holiday! Muchos Gracias mis amigos.

Bigastro Golf Society at La Finca.

The weather was a little cold for our 1st ever day out at La Finca. I, unfortunately, couldn't play due to a bruised lower rib and an inflamation of one of my discs. However, I did turn up to start proceedings off on the 1st tee. It was so cold that Billy even turned up wearing his new long johns, that I think were a Christmas present. Infact, it warmed up in the afternoon, so I don't know if any attempts were made to remove them later !!! Enough said!!
1st off were Billy and Pete. playing with Bob. Billy, playing now off 24 had 3 magnificent par 3's on the 3rd,13th and the 16th and was to come home in 3rd place and with the Best Back 9 Medal. Muy bien mi amigo.It was going to turn out a completely different day however for Peter. Hewill be presented the the Bunker Club Digger, which he could use to carry home his other prize of this month, Mr Blobby. Take care of him Pete, he's never been to Guernsey. Peter also wins 1 of the nearest the pin awards , the 6 and will be able to present she who must be obeyed a garden centre gift voucher from Lo Rubes, Centro Jardineria of Benejufar. I am pleased to anounce this month's winner is Bob Brownlie. This is Bob's 1st win with us and is truly deserved, winning by 7 shots. He had pars on the 3rd and 13th, but it was his consistency that won the day. Bob will receive his new handicap of 23 at the next meeting. Again muy bien mi amigo.
Next away were Keith and Diane Clarke with Antonio Gomez. Antonio is the society's lowest handicap player, but even with pars on the long 5th and the par 4 15th, he was to come home in 2nd place. Los Siento. Keith also had a par, but his was on the tricky 14th. He also had the Longest Drive and wins Drinks and Tapas with our sponsors at La Tasca, situated en El Parque in Bigastro, Our thanks once again goes to the owner Maria Newman. Diane won the Best Front 9 Medal with her par 4 8th and an exellent par 5 11th.
The last group out were Scotty with his guest Rodney and Andy with his guest Bill Conway.
It was Bill, who indeed won our Best Guest prize.Scotty played with the usual smile on his face and it is always a pleasure to spend a day's with him. At least this month he's not going home with The Bunker Club. Andy will have 1 point added to his handicap, but Andy also receives the Nearest The Pin prize.
